Data Policy

  • I. The Significance of Sharing Data Associated with Papers

    Data associated with papers refers to data generated through basic research, applied research, experimental development, etc., that is used to support the publication of academic papers, as well as original data and derived data obtained through methods such as observation and monitoring, investigation and surveying, and inspection and testing, and used to form paper figures and tables and support paper research conclusions.

    The sharing of data associated with papers has multiple significances: First, data is important evidence for the research results and conclusions of papers, and sharing can enhance the verifiability and transparency of research; second, open access to data helps increase the attention and influence of scientific journal papers; third, the reuse of data can save manpower and material resources, allowing researchers to focus on innovative research; fourth, paper data, as a new type of academic achievement, will promote innovative cooperation and talent cultivation across disciplines and advance open science practices. This journal encourages authors to share data associated with papers to the maximum extent possible under the premise of compliance, and promotes data compliance with the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable).

    Ⅱ. Types of Data Associated with Papers and Sharing Requirements

    This journal implements tiered sharing management for data associated with papers, specifically divided into the following levels:

    (I) Data that must be shared

    Data used by authors to directly support paper conclusions must be shared. Such data is necessary evidence for the validity of paper conclusions, and failure to share it will affect the verifiability of the paper.

    (Ⅱ) Data encouraged to be shared

    Data generated by authors in conducting research for the paper topic and reflected in the paper, or data reused or analyzed by authors in conducting research for the paper topic, are encouraged by this journal to be shared by authors.

    (Ⅲ) Data shared voluntarily

    Original, unprocessed data obtained by authors from experiments or observations in conducting research for the paper topic and not reflected in the paper may be shared at the author's voluntary discretion.

    (Ⅳ) Data not suitable for sharing and exceptional handling

    Data involving research ethics, sensitive information, confidential information, or circumstances in which sharing data would harm the legitimate rights and interests of third parties are not suitable for sharing. For data not suitable for sharing, if irreversible de-identification has been carried out, or if it can be shared for other lawful and reasonable reasons, it may be shared after the data author provides a de-identification statement or other supporting documents.

    (V) Circumstances in which there is no data associated with the paper

    If the paper research is conducted within theory and mathematical methods and does not generate or analyze any data, the author should clearly state this in the data availability statement.

    Ⅲ. Data Standards and Formats

    The sharing of data associated with papers does not restrict the data format submitted by authors. However, considering aspects such as data reusability and long-term accessibility, authors are requested to preferentially refer to the list of recommended formats. If the selected data file format is not yet on the recommended list, authors should self-assess the reusability and long-term sustainable accessibility of the data file from the following three aspects:

    The file format adopted is a commonly used format in the field;

    The file format adopted has open specifications or standards;

    The file format adopted is independent of specific software, developers, or suppliers.

    If the above requirements cannot be fully met, please also satisfy these three principles as much as possible. If the selected data file must be opened or used with specific and non-universal software, authors are requested to also provide information such as the name of the relevant software and how to use it, and explain this in the data availability statement.

    List of recommended file formats:

    (I) Data Repository

    Data associated with papers should be submitted and shared in a data repository. The data repository is: Science Data Bank (ScienceDB).

    (Ⅱ) Data Identification

    Data submitted and published in the data repository will obtain a unique data identifier (such as CSTR, DOI), which is used to query and access the relevant data. If the content, location, and other information of the associated data need to be presented in the paper, please place the web link of the unique data identifier (for example: https://cstr.cn/31253.11.sciencedb.01092, https://doi.org/10.11922/sciencedb.01092) as the data link in the text.

    (Ⅲ) Data Submission Time

    Authors should complete the submission of data associated with the paper at the paper acceptance stage. After the data is reviewed, approved, and published, the unique data identifier takes effect, and the data can be retrieved on the platform and dissemination indexing platforms.

    V. Methods of Data Sharing

    (I) Direct Sharing

    Once the data associated with the paper submitted by the author passes review, it will be published immediately, that is, the metadata and data files will be open to the public for access and retrieval.

    (Ⅱ) Conditional Sharing

    After the protection period, the data will automatically become open access, and the public may access and retrieve its metadata and data files.

    Access upon application: If the data associated with the paper submitted by the author is not suitable for open sharing for special reasons, data users must submit a data access application to the author and may obtain the data files only after obtaining the author's authorization or consent. For data not suitable for open sharing, the author should provide this journal with a written explanation of the relevant circumstances and provide relevant supporting materials.

    Ⅵ. Data Rights Management

    (I) Data Submission

    Authors should confirm that they have the right to submit the data. The intellectual property rights related to the data are enjoyed by the original rights holders and will not be transferred to this journal.

    (Ⅱ) Data Use

    Data users must use the data in accordance with the data use license agreement selected by the author.

    The data use license agreements that authors may choose include but are not limited to: CC0 (Waiver), CC-BY 4.0 (Attribution), CC BY-SA 4.0 (Attribution-ShareAlike), CC BY-NC 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercial), CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike), CC BY-ND 4.0 (Attribution-NoDerivatives), CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives), and ODbL (Attribution-ShareAlike-Keep Open; this agreement is applicable to large-scale datasets or databases).

    For the full version of the CC agreements, please see: https://creativecommons.org/about/cclicenses/;

    For the full version of the ODbL agreement, please see: https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/.

    Ⅶ. Data Review

    The data storage platform conducts a formal review of the data associated with the paper submitted by the author, mainly reviewing whether the data have been uploaded, whether the uploaded data are accessible, whether a data availability statement has been submitted (if required), and other such content.

    Authors should complete the submission of data associated with the paper at the acceptance stage.

    Ⅷ. Data Availability Statement

    (I) Significance and Requirements of the Statement

    The "Data Availability Statement" is a document or text explaining whether the data associated with the paper can be obtained and the specific methods of obtaining it. It mainly includes the storage method of the data associated with the paper, access links, unique identifiers, and the names of software or tools for opening or using the data. The use of the "Data Availability Statement" helps improve research transparency and reproducibility, and is of great significance for the repeated verification of paper conclusions, data reuse, and research integrity.

    All submitted papers must include a "Data Availability Statement." Authors should attach the "Data Availability Statement" after the main text of the paper and before the references.

    (II) Statement Templates

    The "Data Availability Statement" templates are as follows, for authors' reference:

    X. Help and Support

    (I) Data Submission Process: Science Data Bank (ScienceDB)

    Platform registration and login: Authors may choose to register and log in with a data repository platform account, or may choose third-party user authentication login supported by the repository platform.

    Data submission and modification: Authors create a new dataset through the data submission entrance. At this point, the data is assigned a unique identifier (CSTR and DOI) and a private access link. In this process, authors fill in metadata information, upload data files, select open sharing methods, and provide other information. At this stage, authors may save drafts temporarily and make changes to the information until submission. After the data is submitted, if the data reviewer provides modification comments, the user must modify the data until the data passes review.

    Before data publication, the data may only be disseminated internally through private access links and anonymous private links for editorial review and other internal purposes. If it needs to be used for paper or data review, authors may select the corresponding dataset on the "My Data Center" homepage, select "Private Link" in the "View" column, copy the "Private Access Link," and send it to the receiving party; if it needs to be used for blind review of papers or data, authors may, under the aforementioned path, copy the "Anonymous Private Link" and send it to the receiving party.

    Data publication and dissemination: After the data passes review and is published, the unique data identifier takes effect. The data can be retrieved on the platform and dissemination indexing platforms, and the unique data identifier (CSTR and DOI) can be copied for data sharing and dissemination.

    Data updates: Once data is published, if files need to be added or data update operations need to be carried out, authors need to initiate the creation of a new version of the data and submit the update information. As with the old version, user update information must be reviewed before publication.
